For sale is a Steel Engraving of British India Map by John Tallis & Co. / J. Rapkin / A. H. Wray / G. Greenbach c.1860
A decorative and detailed mid 19th century map of India (including Nepal) which was drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin (vignettes by A. H. Wray & G. Greatbach) and published* in Thomas Wright's Universal Pronouncing Dictionary (London: London Printing and Publishing House, c.1860).
*Originally issued in John Tallis's Illustrated Atlas (see below).
The Illustrated Atlas, published from 1849 to 1853, was the last decorative world atlas. The 'British India' map was typical of the many fine ones which appeared in this work with its decorative border and attractive vignettes.
Illustrated are views of Lahore; Cootub Minar, Delhi; an Indian procession and Belouche tribesmen.
This is an original steel engraving with original (map outline) and later (vignettes and border) hand colour.
Printed area is approximately 10.0" x 13.25".
As seen in the images the British India Map by John Tallis & Company is in excellent/new condition. There are no rips, tears, or holes in the matted part of the print. there are excellent margins and a single vertical fold, as issued.
The complexity and execution of the map is reason enough to buy this work, but the colors, detail, and topics of the illustrations are simply beautiful and wonderful in themselves. Think the illustrations are also sometimes called vignettes. The vignettes on this map seem more detailed and better colored than other copies I have seen on the internet.
The frame is in very good condition but appears to have been re-painted. The back of the frame is sealed with paper and a hanging wire is attached.
The outer dimensions of the frame are about 18.0" wide by 21.0" high.
